discuss how histology reports from the adenocarcinoma of the colon can contribute to prognosis prediction and treatment

discuss how histology reports from the adenocarcinoma of the colon can contribute to prognosis prediction and treatment

Paper details:

Introduction
Should give a brief explanation of the normal colon and its function.
Should give a brief overview of adenocarcinoma – its importance.
Should state the aims . Aims should be brief and be focussed on the title.

Main body
Should explain what is needed from the tissue in order to create a prognosis/suggest treatment.
For example you could explain that the degree of cellular differentiation is an important determining factor when looking at prognosis as it gives an idea of how far away from the normal cell the cancerous cells are. You would explain what cellular features are present in a well differentiated cell and how this changes the degree of differentiation decreases. You would discuss how differentiation is determined within histology and that H&E is key to this. You would not describe the H&E stain and how it is done you would briefly explain that fixed tissue that has been embedded in paraffin wax and sectioned can be stained with H&E because haematoxylin stains the nuclei and allows detailed cellular examination. So the key is how the tests used allow the information that is needed to make a prognosis/predict treatment not how the tests are actually performed. This then becomes a discussion and not a description of the tests that are used.

You should not be defining what a histology lab is or what a pathologist does. You do not need to include information on adoncarcinoma symptoms, diagnostic tests, predisposing factors, methods of surgery/biopsy methods etc. The focus should be on the cellular changes that are indicative of the condition and how the histological tests allow them to be detected.

You can briefly mention advances in the area for example the detection of specific biomarkers via IHC and/or genetic screening. You would explain that these are not currently routine procedures but there is potential for them to become so in the future. You would then pick this up again in the discussion.
Discussion
Discusses the importance of the findings found at the cellular level and documented on the histology report in determining a prognosis and treatment plan. Discusses the usefulness/effectiveness of this method of prognosis determination/treatment determination. Discusses future developments – the way forward.
